Illuminate Your Path: Using a Flashlight for Safe Street Crossing at Night
When the sun sets and the streets dim, visibility becomes poor and the simple act of crossing the road can be a bit more risky. Whether you're navigating a poorly lit neighborhood or crossing a busy intersection, ensuring your and your family’s safety is paramount. In these situations, a humble yet powerful tool can make all the difference: the flashlight.
Why Use a Flashlight?
A flashlight is not just a handy gadget for finding your keys in the dark; it's a safety essential, especially when it comes to crossing streets at night. Most obviously, a flashlight enhances visibility of your surroundings so you can perceive and avoid threats or obstacles. But, did you know that a flashlight can reduce your chances of being hit by a car by simply signaling your presence?
At night, it can be hard to see a person, especially if he/she is wearing dark clothing, but the light cast by a flashlight is harder to miss. The next time you cross the street at night, shine a flashlight at your feet or a little ahead. You will be visible from a much greater distance, giving drivers more time to react and slow down. Please do not shine a light at the driver as this is quite rude and may provoke a conflict. Simply announce your presence, mark your position, and display your movement across the street.
Which flashlight?
Sure, you can use the flashlight on your phone, but do you really want to encourage your kids to pull out their cell phone when they cross the street? For that matter, we adults should break this habit. Instead, carry your own designated flashlight. It won’t bing with a new message and the batteries won’t be dead from an epic photo sesh.
Though a heavy, durable, 900,000 lumen, high-range flashlight (Amazon) is not strictly necessary to cross the street, tactical lights are wonderful as a non-lethal self-defense tool. We will get into this later!
Pen lights like this Streamlight (Amazon) are discrete and can clip onto a hat or fit into a purse. During my high-boots phase, I would always clip a pocket knife into one boot and a pen light in the other. Pen lights are good for kids because they fit in small hands and they don’t have many lumens so a kid is unlikely to accidentally blind his sibling.
A good in between is the WOWTAC A7 EDC Tactical Flashlight (Amazon). It is small for the number of lumens while being large enough for most adult hand sizes to hold.
Conclusion
Even with a flashlight, remember to always stay alert. Just because you see a car and they should see you, watch to make sure they are paying attention before you cross the street. Also, whenever possible, cross the street at designated crosswalks or intersections. These areas are equipped with traffic signals and signage designed to enhance pedestrian safety.
By incorporating a flashlight into your nighttime routine, you can illuminate your path, signal your presence to drivers, and navigate safely to your destination. Remember, when it comes to pedestrian safety, visibility is key, and a flashlight is a worthy tool to carry with you.
P.S. Again, please do not shine lights into people’s faces unless it is a self defense scenario (more on this later) as it may do more harm than good.
